NOTICE RE: ELECTRONIC FILING

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit will soon be implementing the ECF system for the electronic filing of court documents. ECF is the vehicle for the electronic filing of documents by counsel directly onto the court’s docket in PDF format, as well as for electronic service by counsel and noticing by the court. Appellate ECF is similar in concept and format to the ECF system in place in the district courts, although the district and appellate systems differ in many of the particulars.

In order to use ECF, which will be mandatory for all counsel once the system is fully implemented, counsel will need to register with the court of appeals as an ECF filer. Registrations with the district court will not carry over into the court of appeals. In order to use ECF one must be a member in good standing of the bar of the Sixth Circuit, and must also have a PACER account. A special appellate registration form must be completed before ECF filer status can be granted by the court of appeals.

In coming weeks the court’s website, http://www.ca6.uscourts.gov ,will have additional information on ECF, and you are encouraged to check it periodically for updates.
