Known as the U. S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio when it was created in 1855, the district is divided into two divisions.

The Eastern Division consists of Ashland, Ashtabula, Carroll, Columbiana, Crawford, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Holmes, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Richland, Stark, Summit, Trumbull, Tuscarawas, and Wayne counties. The court sits at Akron, Cleveland, and Youngstown.

The Western Division consists of Allen, Auglaize, Defiance, Erie, Fulton, Hancock, Hardin, Henry, Huron, Lucas, Marion, Mercer, Ottawa, Paulding, Putnam, Sandusky, Seneca, Van Wert, Williams, Woods, and Wyandot counties. The court sits at Lima and Toledo.
