John M. Manos
(1922-2006)

 

John Michael Manos, son of Michael E. and Maria Manos, was born on December 8, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Case Institute of Technology at Case Western Reserve University where he received a B.S. in Metallurgy in 1944. During World War II, Manos was on active duty with the United States Navy from 1943-1945. 

After the war ended, he attended Cleveland-Marshall Law School at Cleveland State University, while working as assistant plant manager at the Lake City Malleable Iron Company. Manos was a member of Delta Theta Phi and Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternities.

After graduating from law school, Manos practiced law in Cleveland and served as law director of the City of Bay Village (1954-1956). He was a member of the Cleveland Regional Board of Review for Workmen's Compensation as an industries' representative from 1950-1963. In 1958, Manos and his brother, Eli formed a law partnership under the name of Manos & Manos. Elected in 1963, he served one term as Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for Cuyahoga County. In 1969, he became a judge of the Ohio Court of Appeals of the Eighth Appellate District.

On March 29, 1976, President Gerald R. Ford appointed Manos to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. He took the oath of office on April 9, 1976, and opened resident chambers at the United States Courthouse in Cleveland. After fifteen years on the bench, Judge Manos became a Senior U. S. District Judge on April 1, 1991. He continued to serve another fifteen years until his death on July 6, 2006.

Active in professional and community organizations, Judge Manos held memberships in the Federal Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Cuyahoga County Bar Association, the Bar Association of Greater Cleveland, and the Ohio Bar Association. He was a founding member of the Celebrezze Cleveland Inns of Court, Cleveland, Ohio, and an Honorary Member of the National Lawyers Club, Inc. He served as a member of the Federation of Community Planning, the visiting committee for physical education and athletics of Case Western Reserve University, and as a member of the Board of Overseers at Cleveland-Marshall Law School.

For his profession and civic contributions, Judge Manos was awarded, the Case Western  University Alumni Outstanding Service Award, the Cleveland State University Alumni Distinguished Service Award, and Man of the Year awards from Delta Theta Phi (1970) and Phi Alpha Delta (1972) fraternities. In 1976, he was named outstanding alumnus of Cleveland-Marshall Law School. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Northern District of Ohio Chapter of the Federal Bar Association in 2004.

Judge Manos was married to the former Viola Chevako and they were the parents of four children: Donna (Manos) Uebler, Christine (Manos) McLaughlin, Michael and Keith.
