Nicholas Joseph Walinski was born in Toledo, Ohio on November 29, 1920. In 1942 he went on active duty in the Navy as a flight instructor and later as a pilot aboard the attack carrier USS Tarawa. After his active military service he entered the University of Toledo graduating in 1950 with a B.S. in Engineering and in 1951, he received his LL.B. degree, also from that university.
Judge Walinski was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1951 and appointed assistant Toledo law director in 1953. From 1953 to 1958 he served as police prosecutor for Toledo. In 1958 he was appointed by Governor William O'Neill to the position of Toledo Municipal Judge. Governor Rhodes in 1964 appointed him to the Court of Common Pleas, and he was later elected to the same court after being endorsed overwhelmingly by the Toledo Bar Association. He continued in this position until President Richard M. Nixon appointed him to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. He was sworn in on November 5, 1970.
Judge Walinski has been a member of the Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, and American Bar Associations; Ohio Common Pleas Judges Association, Ohio Judicial Conference, American Judicature Society, American Legion, and various civic associations. In 1966 he was graduated from the National College of State Trial Judges.
Judge Walinski was married to Vivian C. Melotti, and they had five children: Nicholas Joseph, III, Marcianne, Barbara, Deanna and Donna (twins). |
