Known as the U. S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio when it was created in 1855, the district is divided into two divisions.

The Eastern Division consists of Athens, Belmont, Coschocton, Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Gallia, Guernsey, Harrison, Hocking, Jackson, Jefferson, Know, Licking, Logan, Madison, Meigs, Monroe, Morgan, Morrow, Muskingum, Noble, Perry, Pickaway, Pike, Ross, Union, Vinton, and Washington counties. The court sits at Columbus, Ohio.

The Western Division consists of Adams, Brown, Butler, Champaign, Clark, Clermont, Clinton, Darke, Greene, Hamilton, Highland, Lawrence, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, Scioto, Shelby, and Warren counties. The court sits at Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio.
