Known as the U. S. District Court for the East District of Tennessee when it was created in 1802, the district is divided into four divisions.

The Northern Division consists of Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Grainer, Jeferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. The court sits in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The Northeastern Division consists of Carter, Cocke, Greene, Hamblen, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi, and Washington counties. The court sits in Greeneville, Tennessee.

The Southern Division consists of Bledsoe, Bradley, Hamilton, McMinn, Marion, Meigs, Polk, Rhea, and Sequatchie counties. The court sits in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The Winchester Division consists of Bedford, Coffee, Franklin, Grundy, Lincoln, Moore, Van Buren, and Warren counties. The court sits in Winchester, Tennessee.
