Known as the U. S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee when created January 18, 1839, the number of divisions in the district have changed over the years, but today there are three divisions.

The Columbia Division consists of Giles, Hickman, Lawrence, Lewis, Marshall, Maury, and Wayne counties. The court sits in Columbia, Tennessee.

The Nashville Division consists of Cannon, Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Houston, Humphreys, Montgomery, Robertson, Rutherford, Stewart, Sumner, Trousdale, Williamson, and Wilson counties. The court sits in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Northeastern Division consists of Clay, Cumberland, De Kalb, Fentress, Jackson, Macon, Overton, Pickett, Putnam, Smith, and White counties. The court sits in Cookeville.
